LONG BEACH, CALIF. – The Pacific Merchant Shipping Association (PMSA) issued the following statement following the joint statement released by Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson in support of the development of a new zero-emissions infrastructure plan for the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach:
“We strongly support and are very encouraged by the Mayors’ joint statement supporting a much-needed zero emissions infrastructure plan for the Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles,” said Thomas Jelenić, PMSA Vice President. “A significant investment in alternative fuels and electrical infrastructure, coupled with a move away from the District’s proposed Indirect Source Rule, will expedite further emissions reductions from the Ports. PMSA applauds Mayors Bass and Richardson, as well as South Coast Air Quality Management District leadership, for their willingness to work with the Ports, industry, and waterfront labor to develop a pragmatic solution necessary to create this essential infrastructure.”
“As the trade association representing the West Coast shipping industry, ocean carriers, and marine terminal operators operating at our Ports, PMSA looks forward to continuing to work with Mayors Bass and Richardson, SCAQMD, organized labor, and both Ports on this vital infrastructure planning and continuing to issue,” concluded Jelenić.
Prior air quality planning initiatives have resulted in some of the cleanest maritime operations and largest improvements in air quality amongst seaport operations in the world. For example, PMSA member companies and the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach have worked for years in collaboration to reduce diesel emissions by 91%.
